Cemetery for the Unknown

Hiroshima, Japan

December 2002
The cemetery for the unknown near Hiroshima. Japan by Archipro was made to accommodate the remains of people buried in unmarked graves that were overwhelmed when a huge new reservoir was created. A gentle and moving monument has been created with the greatest economy of means. When giving the cemetery an award, all members of the jury were impressed by the places power, its perceptive use of materials, and its subtle response to history and place. It is a fine contemporary example of the noble Japanese landscape tradition.
