Bridge

Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, England

December 2002
The footbridge by Wilkinson Eyre at Gateshead, North-east England is a fine and dramatic contribution to that reviving but until recently run-down industrial city. It is remarkably ingenious, with both deck and its supporting heraldic arch made to swivel so that large ships can come up the river. It is a heraldic symbol for the city and is a fine, innovative descendent of a great tradition of engineering innovation in Englands North-east.
